ASD Learning and The Sycamore School was founded by Brisbane parents in September 2014. Having experienced first hand the difficulties in finding appropriate educational settings for their Autistic son, they set out to provide educational options to children with Autism in Queensland. Limited educational options were available which were tailored to the needs of the student as an individual, and provide a holistic approach to education.
We believe in the promise and potential of each student,
respecting their individualism as well as their unique
and creative perspectives on our world.
With over 10,000 primary school aged students in Queensland with a diagnosis of an Autism Spectrum Disorder, there is a growing community not only of students, but also the increased numbers of families and educators who require support.
Our first campus will be on the site of the Alexandra Hills TAFE, with the aim for students to begin in January 2017.
The school will cater for 70 Primary School aged students with an Autism Spectrum Disorder with the aim to expand into high schooling in the future. Class sizes will be a minimum of 10 students with a high staff to student ratio, providing a focused learning environment in the classroom. Each student will have an individual learning plan designed in conjunction with teachers, researchers, therapists, and parents. Each individual learning plan will embody the appropriate learning mode and type for each child, harnessing evidence based autism specific educational methods.
Other holistic programs including inclusion activities with local schools, library, shopping and life skills programs will also be available. We also hope to expand our services to include social clubs, before and after school care, and vacation care.
The proposed catchment includes the following suburbs: Alexandra Hills, Balmoral, Belmont-Gumdale, Birkdale, Brisbane Port – Lytton, Bulimba, Camp Hill, Cannon Hill, Capalab, Carina, Carina Heights, Carindale, Cleveland, Coorparoo, Cornubia – Carbrook, East Brisbane, Greenslopes, Hawthorne, Kangaroo Point, Manly – Lota, Manly West, Morningside – Seven Hills, Murrarie, Norman Park, Ormiston, Redland Bay, Rochedale – Burbank, Rochedale South – Priestdale, Sheldon – Mt Cotton, South Brisbane, Thorneside, Thornlands, Tingalpa, Victoria Pt, Wakerley, Wellington Pt, Woolloongabba, Wynnum, Wynnum West – Hemmant.
ASD Learning’s community of supporters has grown substantially, with over 1500 families following the organisations progress through social media, community engagement and fundraising events. Much work has been done in establishing relationships with key Autism service providers in Queensland, and other stakeholders.
ASD Learning’s Board of Directors are parents and Grandparents of children with an
Autism Spectrum Disorder, who selflessly volunteer their time and expertise
to create better futures for these valuable children.
To improve the lives of people with Autism Spectrum Disorder by providing holistic educational options and settings, as well as supporting their families, care networks, and community stakeholders.
To create settings which provide the specific environmental and educational adjustments to ensure that each student has the opportunity to reach their full potential, with allowances for transitions into mainstream educational settings, community engagement opportunities, to encourage independent living and workforce participation, and better overall wellbeing and prospects for their future. We aim to ensure that each child is given the opportunity to learn in a specialized setting that may act as a stepping stone to typical education, or remain as a foundation of learning in the long term for others.
